Transfers and International Applicants

Please note that membership is not transferable from association to association, so all applicants must follow our provincial entrance requirements and complete an Active member application to become a member. 
 
If you graduated with an International diploma, please contact our office before applying.

Active Membership

To make sure your application process go smoothly, please have the following documents ready before you complete your application:

  • A recent, clear passport-type photo without anyone else in the picture.
  • Massage Therapy Diploma, or proof of graduation from a 2200 hour Massage Therapy Program (encompassing the minimum standard of education as established by the Canadian Massage Therapy Association, from a university, college or school, regulated or licensed by the respective educational authority of the province or territory of the institution).
  • Two letters of recommendation from schools, colleagues, or employers attesting to your ethical character and your support of the standards and practice of the profession. These persons cannot be related to you. The letters must be dated and signed, current within 90 days, and on letterhead if applicable.
  • A current certificate of a minimum Emergency First Aid CPR/AED Level A training. Please note, on-line courses are not accepted. If you have a more advanced certification that is acceptable as well.
  • A current criminal record check. Must be current within 90 days. This can be completed by visiting a police station or online at www.mybackcheck.com. Please note, all pages of the record check must be submitted.
  • If you are applying from one of the regulated provinces or from another massage therapy association in one of the unregulated provinces, a letter confirming registration and/or good standing is required.
  • If you are a member of a Provincial Massage Therapy Association, a letter of standing from that association is required.

    Please allow 5 business days to process your application. For prompt processing of your application, please ensure that all required information is included before you click submit.

Those Massage Therapists who are listed on the active members list of MTANS have paid the required dues and fees. Only active members are entitled to:

  • Be nominated for, elected to, or serve on the Board or Committees.
  • Move or second motions before the membership of MTANS.
  • Vote on said motions.
  • Practice massage therapy as a member of MTANS.
  • Receive a Certificate of Active Membership.
  • Coverage by professional liability insurance and have billing rights through insurance carriers.
  • Non-refundable processing fee of $35, to be paid at the time of application.
  • Non-refundable annual dues of $415, (which includes your insurance premium) pro-rated in your first year based on the number of months of membership in MTANS, to be paid upon approval of the application to finalize membership. The online system will automatically calculate your pro-rated dues.
  • Payment is made online only by Credit card or Visa Debit.

Inactive Membership

  • If a member chooses to become inactive, they cannot practice massage therapy in Nova Scotia.
  • While inactive, members are still responsible for continuing education units, as per MTANS policy.
  • Inactive Members must notify the MTANS office and pay the full fees to reactivate to Active membership status (Continuing Education requirements, and First Aid/CPR must be current).
  • Non-refundable annual dues of $100
  • Payment is made online only by Credit card or Visa Debit.

Student Membership

A student registered in an educational institution recognized by MTANS may join as a student member.
Student membership is free.

Student memberships are for those who are currently enrolled in a recognized 2200-hour Massage Therapy program.  

Upon graduation, students must complete the Active Membership online form if they wish to become a member of MTANS.

Associate Member

An Associate Member is an individual who is, by virtue of their professional interests, committed to the mandate of MTANS. The board votes on applications for associate membership. Please contact MTANS for more information about associate membership. Associate Members are entitled to attend MTANS member meetings, but are not entitled to vote or hold office.

Honourary Member

An Honourary Member is an individual who is not a member of MTANS and who, by meritorious service to the association, has distinguished themselves. Two active members must nominate an individual, and the board votes on whether or not to admit that person. Honourary Members are entitled to attend MTANS member meetings, but are not entitled to vote or hold office.
